Reverend Charlie Thomas

Reverend Charlie Thomas was born in Clarendon County, South Carolina.  He receive his early education in the Clarendon District One Public Schools, where he graduated from Scott’s Branch High School in 1982. Rev. Thomas was the Class of ‘82 President and Student Body President his senior year.
Rev. Thomas earned his Bachelor of Theology degree from Morris College where he was also the recipient of the A. T. Eddy Memorial Award for his outstanding commitment and dedication to religious studies.  He has studied at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary as well as Gammon Theological Seminary. He is a graduate of Duke Divinity School, Durham, North Carolina where he completed the Course of Study program. He earned his Master of Theology degree from Cathedral Bible College.
Rev. Thomas currently serves as:
  • Chairman of the Greenville District Congregational Development Committee of The United Methodist Church
  • Member of the Congregational Development Committee for the United Methodist Annual Conference
  • Member of the Belin Trust Board of Trustees of The United Methodist Church Annual Conference
  • Member of the Morris College Alumni Association
  • Community Foundation of Greenville
  • The Margaret Linder Southern Endowment Committee
Rev. Thomas has participated in and served on many other boards and affiliation to include: 
  • The Marion District Board of Congregational Development of The United Methodist Church
  •  The Marion District Connectional Ministries Lay Leadership Committee of The United Methodist Church
  • He also served on the Anderson District Connectional Ministries Committee and the Superintendency Committee.
  • The Horry-Georgetown Technical College Advisory Board, Myrtle Beach, SC
  • The Coastal Samaritan Counseling Center Board of Trustees, Myrtle Beach, SC
  • The Hartsville District Board of Congregational Development of The United Methodist Church
  • Board of Directors of Communities in School of Kershaw County
  • Rev. Thomas is the past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Methodist Oaks as well of the Development Committee and Finance Committee of the Methodist Oaks, Orangeburg, SC.  As chairperson, Rev. Thomas oversaw a budget of $25 million dollars annually.  This is an elected position of the South Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Rev. Thomas received certification by the office of the Attorney General of the State of South Carolina in Domestic Violence and Coordinated Community Response.

Rev. Thomas is a member of the Omicron Kappa Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. He is a member of the NAACP and the Goodfellows organization of Sumter, South Carolina.  Rev. Thomas has volunteered as a reading mentor at McKissick Elementary School in Easley, South Carolina as well as Hollis Elementary School in Greenville, SC.

Rev. Thomas is a Master Mason of Gum Spring Lodge #458, Prince Hall Affiliated, Bishopville, South Carolina.

Rev. Thomas has served the following appointments in the United Methodist Church:

  • The Bishopville Charge which consists of Springhill and New Haven United Methodist Churches. 
  • The Brookgreen Charge consisting of Heaven’s Gate UMC and Brown Chapel UMC Murrells Inlet, SC and St James UMC in Myrtle Beach South Carolina. 
  • The Easley Charge, Easley South Carolina consisting of Easley Chapel and John Wesley United Methodist Churches.
  • He presently serves as the Senior Pastor of John Wesley United Methodist Church located in Greenville, South Carolina.

      Rev. Thomas believes the Leadership Team members that surround the pastor makes all the difference in the life of the church and the community. Rev. Thomas has been called by God to be a pastor and lead congregations for over 30 years. 

      Rev Thomas is married to Rev. Brenda J. Thomas who is also a United Methodist pastor and serves St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Greenville, South Carolina. They are the parents of 3 sons and 2 grandchildren.
